Day 1

We start off by heading to the South Coast, we drive through the small towns of Hveragerdi and Selfoss before we get to our first stop, the Lava center, a museum where you will see and learn about the volcanic activities that created the past and present landscape of Iceland. Next stop is the amazing Seljalandsfoss. Make sure you bring your waterproof clothes as it is possible to walk behind the waterfall. We will then stop at powerful Skogafoss waterfall. Walk up the staircase beside the waterfall to catch some spectacular views of the South Coast. On a sunny day, both waterfalls will be made even more beautiful by splendid rainbows. Also, they are both a part of the same glacier where the famous eruption of Eyjafjallajokull took place in 2010. A walk along the eastern path will take you very close to the glacier and you will see a small lake that has formed due to the melting of the glacier over the last 20 years. You’ll notice the ice on the glacier has black stripes because it is mixed with volcanic ash from several eruptions, including the Eyjafjallajokull eruption that made Iceland famous worldwide, stopping the air traffic over Europe for months. Myrdalsjokull is the glacier that Solheimaokull belongs to. Myrdalsjokull, not to be outdone (nothing ever is in Iceland!) has its own well-known quite dangerous volcano, Katla, which is currently overdue for an eruption as well.
For those who are fans of Justin Bieber, the plane wreck he made so very popular in his music video is a site to visit. To get to the plane wreck, you need to walk about 1.6 miles in the sand from the main road. This photo adventure can take around 1-1.5 hours. On the way there, you can see elf dwelling Drangar and you will feel the amazing power flowing from the elves and the rock formations they dwell in. Later, we will visit the cliffs of Dyrholaey and the black beach Reynisfjara, with its basalt columns and caves, before we get to Vik, a charming fishing village situated very close to one of Iceland’s most famous and dangerous volcano, famous for its black beaches and its sea stacks. After lunch, we continue towards the south east and we stop to see Fjadrargljufur, a beautiful canyon. We drive through the magnificent Icelandic landscapes with the change to see lava fields, sand deserts and glacier tongues before we get to our 3 Star hotel in Skaftafell, where we will spend the night and rest before another exciting day of sightseeing. All rooms here are modern, with private bathroom facilities. Dinner at the hotel is not included but it is highly recommended.

Day 2

Our second day starts with a delicious breakfast buffet (included in the price).
We drive early, just after the breakfast to catch the morning light on the breath-taking Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, jewel of Iceland’s crown. Here, you can admire floating icebergs of several sizes and shapes that from the main glacier make their way to the ocean. A walk on the nearby Diamond Beach will give you the chance to see icebergs that are washed up on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, with very different colors than the other icebergs in the lagoon.
Your Glacier Hike on the Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, starts here. A specialized local guide will be with you at all times during this 2-3 hours walk to discover the wonders of the glacier.
You will walk close to astonishing blue ice formations and you will have an amazing view of the Glacier Lagoon from a different side. This will be a once in a lifetime experience. After making hundreds of photos at the Glacier Lagoon, we head back towards Reykjavik, stopping at Fjallsarlon, a mini version of the Glacier Lagoon often with more, but smaller icebergs and less tourists.
From there, we continue our drive past Vatnajokull, catching just the right light for good photos, especially of Svinafellsjokull glacier tongue showing its amazing emerald green ice tongue flowing down between the cliffs. Than we will drive back to Skaftafell where, if you are up for a short hike, you can see Svartifoss, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by dark lava columns. We will make some more stops: as the old turf Church near Hofn and old Viking houses an Kirkjubaejarklaustur, where it is believed Irish monks lived before the Vikings arrived in Iceland. This was also the location of a well know convent of Benedictine nuns from 1186 until 1550. The beautiful waterfall seen from the road bears the name Systrafoss, the sisters waterfall. From here, the journey continues with a restful drive along Hjorleifshofdi, where one of the first Vikings founded his settlement. Continuing from there we pass the town of Vik and the sights seen the day before but in a different light so any wishes for a stop for photo shoot will be granted. Last waterfall on the schedule is Urridafoss in Thjorsa river. We will be back in Reykjavik in time to freshen up and have a nice dinner in one of the many restaurants available in the city.
